The only other difference in this variation is the full-stop (.) and the colon or semicolon which is a point above the line (·).

The one alteration textual critics concern themselves with is in assuming the phrase "they shall call" in Beza should be changed to "you shall call." This would've switch the meaning somewhat from Immanuel being a title proclaimed by the couple to a name given by Joseph.
In his 191 list of changes from the Greek of Beza, Scrivener mentions that he has changed Beza's 1598 with καλέσεις and replaced it with καλέσουσι, claiming the KJV followed this reading. He has in his list:
- Erasmus
Beza has καλέσεις while Scrivener has καλέσουσι with Stephanus. Scrivener said:
Beza's καλέσεις means to call or name. Scrivener changed καλέσεις into the impersonal καλέσουσι in an attempt to follow the King James Version's ‘they shall call’ as also read the Geneva ‘they shal cal’ and Bishops' although they follow the different Greek of Stephanus and Scrivener with καλέσουσι, while the King James follows Beza with καλέσεις.
Beza said in his 1556 New Testament:
- I know that in most copies καὶ καλέσουσι is read, that is, 'and they will call', or 'and he [Jesus] will be called', which reading was also followed by Justin Martyr... But as our Stephanus noted that some old copies agree with the Hebrew, and as great force would seem to lie in this apostrophe by the prophet, seized by God's Spirit, in which he addresses himself to the Virgin who would be born so many centuries later as if she were present, I have followed my own judgement in this matter, without — in my opinion — any damage to the meaning.” (Beza’s new Latin translation with the Vulgate and his annotations)
In his 1582 New Testament Beza has:
- “Sed praestat receptam lectionem sequi, ut sit apostrophe prophetae Spiritu Dei correpti, et virginem post tot secula nascituram, quasi praesentem, alloquentis. Quod magnam vim habet”
- “But it is preferable to follow the received reading, so that it is an apostrophe by the prophet, seized by God’s Spirit, in which he addresses himself to the Virgin who would be born so many centuries later as if she were present, which has great force.”
Beza has:
- καλέσεις ‘thou shalt call,’ - is the indicative active future, 2nd person singular verb, from kaleo.
Scrivener has:
- καλέσουσι ‘they shall call,’ is the indicative active future, 3rd person plural verb, from kaleo.
How can Beza's singular reading of καλέσεις reconcile with the plural King James translation of ‘they shall call’?
For example, two verses earlier, Matthew 1:21 has καλέσεις in both Beza and Scrivener and it is translated as the singular ‘thou shalt call.’ If the KJV translators followed the 1598 text of Beza, would this not surely be an example of where they deviated from the text of Beza, giving preference to earlier readings of καλέσουσι? I don't think so.
The 1611 margin in both Isaiah and Matthew gives us a key element to this seemingly problematic reading.
- a virgin…shall call: Or, thou, O virgin, shalt call (Isaiah 7:14)
- they shall call his name: Or, his name shall be called (Matthew 1:23)
It must be noted that in the KJV 1611 there are 6,565 marginal notes. These notes refer to different things. Some reveal an alternative reading that was considered by the translators but rejected. Others show where manuscript evidence is lacking. But for many notes, and I believe Matthew 1:23 is an example of this, the margin is simply a synonymous way of reading the verse, to clear up concepts that are not easy to decipher when looking at the Greek base text and English translation. At times, singular words were mistakenly seen by Scrivener to have been erroneously translated as plural, or Scrivener assumed the translators used an earlier Textus Receptus edition. Matthew 10:10 is a good example of where Scrivener gets it wrong, assuming that the plural staves must be translated from a plural Greek word. So in the Trinitarian Bible Society's printed edition of Scrivener's work, he has the plural ‘Rabdous’, and not the singular ‘Rabdon’. The problem is easily solved in knowing that Jesus was speaking to a plural number of people about a singular item. Much like if I told a crowd of people to switch of their phone, phone is a singular used as a plural here. The Greek ‘Rabdon’, ‘nor staff’, was translated as ‘nor staves’, in the KJV (in the KJV 2016 ‘nor staffs’) due to this principle. Grammatically this is called a collective noun. A collective noun is a noun that can be singular in form whilst referring to a group of people or things.
Some nouns are used only in the singular, even though they end in -s. Some examples include: the names of academic subjects such as classics, economics, mathematics/maths, physics; the physical activities gymnastics and aerobics; the diseases measles and mumps; and the word news etc.
This reveals the key to this scripture. Matthew under the guidance of the Holy Spirit translated the Hebrew words in Isaiah 7:14, written to the virgin: "...Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel...". This practice reveals to Beza that καλέσεις in verse 21 can also be translated concerning the plural couple, which is clear in the Greek in context, but abundantly clear in English in the inclusion of the plural ‘shall’ upon a singular Greek word. Thus the KJV translators also had no issue with translating the first καλέσεις in verse 21 as thou shalt call and the second as they shall call because each one is translated according to the context and not just the dictionary definition. It seems strange to consider the "thou shalt call" in Matthew 1:21 as not the subject of the "they shall call" in verse 23. Many times it is seen that verse 21 is fulfilled in verse 25. But in context here, it is clear:
- 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
- 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
- 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
Examples of καὶ καλέσεις being translated as thou shalt call are:
- Luke 1:13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
- "...καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰωάννην..." thou shalt call his name John
- Luke 1:31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS
- "...καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦν..." (thou) shalt call his name JESUS.
So one can understand why Scrivener thought καλέσεις should only be translated into the singular.

- (k) There is an article added in the Hebrew and Greek text, to point out the woman and set her forth plainly: as we would say, the virgin, or a certain virgin. (Beza, Theodore. "Commentary on Matthew 1:23". "The 1599 Geneva Study Bible". )

- Conclusion “And”
So even though Scrivener changed Beza's “εὗρον” to “εἶδον,” it is of no real significance because both mean “invenerunt” in Latin. All throughout the reformation in Matthew 2:11 they used “εἶδον,” “εὗρον,” and “invenerunt” side by side. In his Latin, Erasmus used “repererunt” (found) for “εὗρον” in 1516, but later editions say “invenerunt”. The Complutensian used the different “εἶδον,” but still had had “invenerunt” in Latin.
On Page 243 of The authorized edition of the English Bible (1611) its subsequent reprints and modern representatives by F. H. A. Scrivener Published 1884, it says that the Complutensian and the Bishops' have in place of "εἶδον" (for "εὗρον").
The KJV translates εὗρον as 'I perceived' in "...Whom I perceived to be accused of..." in Acts 23:29. "I saw" and "I perceived" are very similar. Why wouldn't Scrivener think of changing it here also? He is simply trying to incorporate Westcott and Hort readings into the TR.
The concept of finding or discovering something is the act of seeing it. Many explorers found/discovered lands from their ship, but merely "saw" it and never set foot on it. A people can look into a telescope and have a new find when they simply saw something. I think the Complutensian Polyglot sided with the Latin, which is after all, a translation. Even the concept in Matthew 7:7 & 8 εὗρον is the result of seeking:
- 7 ...seek, and ye shall find; knock, and...
- 8 ...he that seeketh findeth; and...
Also John 7:
- 34 Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come. 35 Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles? 36 What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?
In Revelation 16:20 it says:
- And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.
Which is another example of found and seen being synonymous in certain contexts, "the mountains were not found" meaning they were no longer discoverable, visible, or able to be seen.
To find means to discover, i.e. "to obtain the first knowledge or sight of what was before not known." But to "find, discover" something people already know about is not to "find" it, but rather "see" it. Thus the KJV translators used the correct word with see here.
The Latin invenerunt is related to the English word invention. Middle English inventen, borrowed from Old French inventer, from Latin inventus, perfect passive participle of inveniō (“come upon, meet with, find, discover”), from in (“in, on”) + veniō (“come”); see venture. Compare advent, covent, event, prevent, etc.

Why did Scrivener claim that the KJV follows the Complutensian reading when the above English bibles have the same reading without following any Greek text with "εἷς".
Green in his 1976 interlinear of Scrivener has "one" above "εἷς" but considers it unimportant and in the LITV Translation on the side has "..behold, coming up a ruler bowed before him.." So he leaves the εἷς untranslated. In his Interlinear Greek New Testament Third Edition, he has "..behold, coming one ruler worshiped Him.." and εἷς has "one" above it.
Zodhiates and the Online bible both have εἷς meaning "a certain"

King James Translators' Notes say - "staves: Gr. a staff" but this is not in the 1611 margin.
When Jesus was talking to the twelve, he mentioned several objects. Obviously when we look into the Synoptics we see that forbidding a singular staff was not forbidden by Christ. Because in the Greek, it is understood that rabdon was meant to be singular in a sense of each individual, in English the context warranted the plural staves (staffs) because if it was singular, the English speaker would immediately assume that every individual was forbidden to take a staff. But by making it plural, as the context clearly portrays, the misapplying of the singular staff to each individual and not the entire group is not mistakenly read into the text, which many modern versions have found creates a glaring contradiction that the KJV does not have. The KJV and TR agree perfectly here, as Scrivener did not define the word in its plural context.
If I said, "leave you phone here" to a crowd of people, am I speaking plural or singular? Phone is singular, but becomes plural in context. The same with Rabdon.

Scrivener changed his 1881 Greek New Testament to Beelzebub in this verse as opposed to Beza's 1598 Greek Beelzeboul. But he was in error to do so because it can be easily explained by the translators second rule which stated
- "The names of the prophets and the holy writers with the other names of the text to be retained as nigh as may be, accordingly as they were vulgarly used."
The name Beelzebub had been established in English, German, and Latin usage and so became the acceptable translation of Beelzeboul in translations. Others that read Beelzebub are Zwingli’s Swiss bible of 1531, Luther's 1565 Bible, the 1599 Nuremberg Polyglot have it in the German, Danish, Latin, Italian, Galice, and Bohemice. The Italian Diodoti of 1661 also has it. It was not a strange practice to alter proper names from the Greek text to a name more agreeable in its traditional English pronunciation, for example “Paulos” was altered to “Paul” (2 Timothy 1:1), “Looidi” is “Lois” (2 Timothy 1:5), “Euneika” to “Eunice” (2 Timothy 1:5), “Petros” to “Peter” (1 Peter 1:1), “Jakobos” to “James” (James 1:1), “Joudas” to “Jude” (Jude 1:1), and “Timotheo” to “Timothy” (1 Timothy 1:2), etc. If the translators were justified in converting the Greek spelling of proper names of people, why are they not justified in changing the proper name of “Beelzeboul” in Greek to “Beelzebub” in English? Surely Scrivener should have figured this out?
There are six passages which read “Beelzeboul” in the underlying Greek of Beza which is translated “Beelzebub” by the King James Version translators. The passages are Matthew 12:24, Matthew 12:27, Mark 3:22, Luke 11:15, Luke 11:18, and Luke 11:19. Beelzeboub appears in Scrivener’s Greek only in Matthew 10:25, but not in the other five passages it follows Beelzeboul which is the reading in Beza's 1598. Why he was inconsistent in Matthew 12:25 is because the Complutensian Polyglot only had Beelzebub in Matthew 10:25 but Beezeboul in all other places, so he matched it to that text in his failed attempt to reconstruct the Greek behind the King James Version.

- 1568 - which sowed (Bishops')
Beza has σπείροντι whereas Scrivener changes this into σπείραντι, citing that Beza's reading comes from the Complutensian Polyglot, Colinæus, and the Vulgate. The only difference is that Beza has an omicron ( ο ) Whereas Scrivener has an Alpha ( α ). Scrivener follows the Tischendorf 8th Edition and the Westcott and Hort 1881 text.
In Verse 18 of the same chapter, Beza has σπείροντος as also does Scrivener. So why is scrivener wanting to change it in verse 24? Beza in his 1598 Latin parallel column translates σπείροντος in Matthew 13:18 as seminat (eius qui seminat is literally, the one who sows). His 1598 Vulgate column has seminantis.
The term sower in the KJV could be rendered "having sown" or in a paraphrase, "the parable of the one having sown." This helps because other times, English sower is not used but "he who sows" or equivalent.
Verse 24 in Beza in his 1598 Latin parallel column has semen.
σπείροντι occurs in 2 Corinthians 9:10 where the KJV has "...seed to the sower (sowing) both..." whereas Matthew 13:24 has "...unto a man which sowed (having sown) good seed in his field..."
............σπέρμα τῷ σπείροντι, καὶ ἄρτον 2 Cor 9:10
οὐρανῶν ἀνθρώπῳ σπείροντι καλὸν σπέρμα Mat 13:24
So while Scrivener makes a difference here, other versions based upon the reading σπείραντι, read the equivalent to the KJV.
- NIV - who sowed

- ESV - who sowed
- NASB - who sowed

- King James Version
- 1611 - -
Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?
Scrivener replaced Beza's ἤ for εἰ.
The ἤ of Beza may be used to introduce either related or opposite alternatives. When the alternatives are opposites, it may be easily rendered as “or” and if context so allows, it may also be rendered “or” for a related alternative. In Matthew 20:15, it introduces a related alternative i.e., “Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? “Or” is thine eye evil, because I am good?”
The Critical Text follows the Scrivener reading. Many examples in the KJV show that ἤ is sometimes untranslated, and sometimes merged with other words. For example:
Matthew 26:53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? The first Greek word being ἤ, is not translated “or” in the KJV and in many modern versions. This is a clear example of divided scholarship, where ἤ is not directly translated as “or” in all cases. This example shows us that Scrivener was correct from the perspective of the Lexicon, but in error when it came to the pattern of the KJV translators, who provided many examples of ἤ not being directly translated, as do also many modern translators. Other examples are Matthew 1:18, Acts 25:6, Romans 9:21, 1 Corinthians 6:9, 1 Corinthians 6:19, 1 Corinthians 14:36, 1 Corinthians 14:36, 2 Corinthians 1:13, Galatians 4:27, etc.
The NKJV, influenced by Hodges & Farstad's work, rejects the text of Scrivener here and correctly follows Beza, without any footnote indicating a diversion from it.
The “ei” of Scrivener is an interrogative participle, which introduces direct or indirect questions which constitute a simple yes or no answer. At times it is translated as "if" or "whether" when concerning an indirect question. When it is used for direct questions it is an untranslatable Greek nuance.

The first “Jesus” in English was added by William Tyndale in his 1534 edition followed by Miles Coverdale in his 1540 Great Bible, by John Rogers in his 1549 Matthew's Bible, by William Whittingham in the 1560 Geneva Bible, the translators of the 1568 Bishop's Bible, and so this method of translation was also adopted in the 1611 King James Version.
The Geneva bible which introduced Italics did not use them in this scripture for the first instance of "Jesus". Although the Geneva translators of 1557 would have been familiar with Theodore Beza´s Latin of 1556 (as he worked on the Genevan text and on the notes), the fact that the Geneva Bible, which was the first to include italics, did not place "Jesus" in italics here, suggest grammatical authority for the reading. All of the translations prior to the Geneva bible, also did not indicate words which were not in the Greek. Neither did Scrivener insert "Jesus" in his edition of the Textus Receptus in 1881, which he would have done if he was back translating from the KJV according to variant readings.
The 1611 did not use Italics here either which was their normal practice, also suggesting they did so because when “He/he” is used it could refer to “Levi” (from verse 14). Clarification was needed in English to differentiate between Levi and Jesus in the text, because the “auton,” or “he” could have refereed to either one of them. It was Jesus (first “auton”) who was sitting in Levi’s (second “autou”) house, not Levi. Clearly this could have been confusing to the English reader if literally translated “he,” thus the translators rightly translated “Jesus” for clarification for the English reader. It is doubtful that the Genevan translators and the King James translators would have left out the opportunity to place "Jesus" in italics here. In Theodore Beza´s Latin translation in his 1598 New Testament, which contains the Greek the translators used, is has in Latin, Iesus, clearly demonstrating that this concept flows into other languages also, including the Spanish Sagradas Escrituras 1569, the Reina Valera 1858, the Spanish Reina Valera 1960, 1995 and the Reina Valera Gómez of 2010, the 1744 French Martin and Ostervald versions, to name a few. Beza also has a footnote in the 1598 describing in Latin why the pronoun was changed into a noun. Another example of Greek being translated into Latin this way is in a 1825 printing of H. A. Schott´s edition of the Greek-Latin New Testament, which has a brief critical apparatus for both the Greek and the Latin, the Latin text reads as follows in Mark 2:15a:
- "In cuius domo quum Jesus postea accubuisset, .....".
That this Latin translation reads "Jesus" here without placing it in a parentheses (or brackets).
A translator has every right to add brief, clarifying words or phrases to his translation of the underlying Greek language while at the same time he is not in violation of adding to the words. If anyone in the future translates this verse and translates the “auton” as “he” and not “Jesus,” providing this makes sense to the English reader (as the NKJV has done), the translator has not omitted the name of Jesus from the bible, as many of the King James Only omission charts assume. The capitalization of the “H” in “He” in the NKJV makes a distinction in the text, but may cause issues when listened to audibly.

Scrivener adds a Kai here. He fails to recognize that earlier English bibles, such as the Geneva and Bishops, based upon the 1550 of Stephanus, also included and without having Kai in the text. So it is another case of Scrivener being ignorant of good English grammar, rather than an oversight in the KJV.

Scrivener changed his 1881 Greek New Testament to Ναζαρέθ in this verse as opposed to Beza's 1598 Greek Ναζαρὲτ. But he was in error to do so because it can be easily explained by the translators second rule which stated:
- "The names of the prophets and the holy writers with the other names of the text to be retained as nigh as may be, accordingly as they were vulgarly used."

Stephanus made only a few changes in Erasmian text but added to the Erasmian text verse Luke 17:36. He took it from Codex Bezae. So the KJV translators said in the footnotes: This 36. verse is wanting in most of the Greek copies

At John 8:6 the King James translators add the clause "as though He heard them not." This clause is found in E G H K and many other manuscripts, in the Complutensian, and in the first two editions of Stephanus. After 1769 it was placed in italics in the King James Version. This is one of the few places where Beza's main text differs from the KJV. Beza has προσποιούμενος in his commentary notes. The Complutensian Polyglot has μὴ προσποιούμενος.

This is one of the rare readings of Beza that disagrees with the KJV. Scrivener has in the Appendix:
- xxv. 6 πλείους] certi omnes: οὐ πλείους Bez. 3. 4. 5. Vul. (A.V. marg).
οὐ means not, πλείους means more than.
The KJV 1611 says:
- "And when he had tarried among them || more then ten days..."
The Marginal note says:
- || Or, as some copies reade, no more than 8 or 10 dayes.

Scrivener adds τὸν to Beza's πατέρα. In Matthew 19:5 for example, τὸν πατέρα does not translate to "the Father" but simply "Father": "shall a man leave father and mother". So we see in English we can see that τὸν πατέρα at times was translated both as "the Father" and also "Father", and πατέρα was also translated both as "the Father" and also "Father". [1]

In Scrivener's TR he omits Amen in Ephesians 6:24. Actually if you look at the 1598 of Beza, it contains Amen in both the Greek, Latin, and Vulgate. The original 1611 KJV did not contain 'amen' due to a printing error. This 'typo' was corrected in 1616. Obviously Scrivener took this as a Textual Emendation rather than a printing error. So you could say that Scrivener was too literal in sticking with the 1611 in his TR. The Text of Beza, 1598 is the Textus Receptus behind the KJV.

Scrivener and Beza have Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ. The KJV has Jesus Christ's. Many times word order is changed to make it easier to read, just look as John 1:1 where the Greek says "and God was the word" "kai theos en ho logos" καὶ Θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος. whereas the English says "and the Word was God" which is perfectly acceptable.

Scrivener has ἀγγελίa but Beza has ἐπαγγελία. ἀγγελίa simply means message, whereas ἐπαγγελία has the meaning of a promise, but also of an announcement. I think Scrivener is spitting hairs here. Seeing Stephanus had ἐπαγγελία just as Beza does and Geneva and Bishops both have tidings from that reading.
The noun "Tidings" is simply an announcement of an event, from late Old English tidung which is an event, occurrence, piece of news. This stems from the verbal noun from Old English tidan meaning to happen. So if we compare God's "tidings" are just His announcement to God's "message", is their really any difference?

Scrivener deletes τῇ in the phrase ἐν τῇ ἀληθείᾳ, which the KJV translators used for "the" in the phrase in the truth. The NKJV following Scrivener has "in truth" omitting "the" and slightly changing the meaning.

Scrivener notes that KJV has "you" and 1598 does not. This however does not mean the KJV followed a different text because the word "you" is in the KJV as italics. This means the KJV followed Beza's text and added the word as a translational decision.

xix. 14 τὰ ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ] Compl. Vulg. Tynd. om. τὰ Er. Ald. Col. St. Bez.
Most English editions have "which were". This reveals that the 1611 is an acceptable translation and the τὰ added by Scrivener is unnecessary. Scrivener seems to suggest that Tyndale was slavishly followed here. Again, Scrivener seems to be influenced by the 1769 Blayney revision, which places the words which were in italics, whereas the 1611 does not do so.

Scrivener has ὄνομα omitting τὸ from Beza. The Greek "τὸ ὄνομα" appears in many verses and is translated according to it's context. (See http://biblehub.com/greek/onoma_3686.htm)
For example, Matthew 1:21 says "καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦν" which is translated in the KJV as "thou shalt call his name JESUS". An over literal rendering would be "you will call the name of him Jesus". This seems to be the rigid way Scrivener made up his 191 list. Not translating from the context, but from a rigid literal dictionary style approach that exemplifies his lack of fluency. It also follows the corrupt text of Westcott and Hort.
Also note that while early editions of the Textus Receptus agree with Beza, so too do the early English translations. Scrivener is going against the reformation versions here and erring towards a starchy lifeless literal meaning.

Scrivener adds τε for 'both.'
xix. 18 ἐλευθέρων τε] Compl. (A. V. 1611). om. τε Er. Ald. Col. St. Bez. Vulg. (italicised A. V. 1769).
- 1769 and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.
- 1611 and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.
- 1568 and the fleshe of all free men, and bonde men, and of small and great.
- 1560 and the flesh of all freemen, and bondmen, and of small and great.
- 1539 and the flesh of all free men and bonde men and of small and gret.
- 1537 & the flesh of all free men & bonde men, & of small & great.
- 1535 and the flesshe of all free men and bond men, both of small and greate.
- 1534 and the flesshe of all free men and bond men and of small and gret.
- 1382 and the fleisch of alle fre men and bonde men, and of smale and of grete.
Under "all men" there are two sets of groups with two subjects each. 1 free and bond, and 2 small and great.
καὶ σάρκας πάντων ἐλευθέρων καὶ δούλων, καὶ μικρῶν καὶ μεγάλων. καὶ σάρκας πάντων, ἐλευθέρων τε καὶ δούλων, καὶ μικρῶν καὶ μεγάλων.
Scrivener places the τε in his 1881 text, believing it to correspond to the word both in both free and bond. There is another both straight after that, that also does not appear to have Greek support of τε but of καὶ. In the same chapter, in Revelation 19:5 it says "both" without a τε but a καὶ. "...and ye that fear him, both small and great..." is from "...καὶ οἱ φοβούμενοι αὐτὸν καὶ οἱ μικροὶ καὶ οἱ μεγάλοι..." which has not corresponding word for both but is from καὶ. But James 3:12 demonstrates that both doesn't always need the Greek support of either τε or καὶ to be a viable translation in English. "...οὕτως οὐδεμια πηγὴ ἁλυκὸν καὶ γλυκὺ ποιῆσαι ὕδωρ..." is translated into the KJV as "...so can no fountaine both yeeld salt water & fresh...". The both here has not Greek support, but is not in italics because it is needed to highlight the unification of the distinct topics in the conjoined saltwater and fresh.
This erroneous train of thinking in causing Scrivener's addition was most probably triggered by the italics that were placed into 1769 Blayney edition of the bible. The 1611 has no such italic. Note in the list above that the 1535 of Tyndale also has the second both when he says: "...both of small and greate..."

Scrivener inserts a καὶ into the text. But was the "and" merely just a case of good English grammar and not of a missing Greek conjunction?
