Minuscule 221

Minuscule 221 (in the Gregory-Aland numbering), α69 (Soden),^[1] is a Greek minuscule manuscript of the New Testament, on parchment. Paleographically it had been assigned to the 10th century.^[2] Scrivener labelled it by 212^a and 250^p.^[3]

Description

The codex contains a complete text of the Acts of the Apostles, Catholic epistles, and Pauline epistles on 382 parchment leaves (size 18.9 cm by 13.4 cm). The text is written in one column per page, 18-19 lines per page.^[2]

The text is divided according to the κεφαλαια (chapters), whose numbers are given at the margin, with their τιτλοι (titles of chapters) at the top of the pages.^[4]

It contains prolegomena, lists of the κεφαλαια (tables of the contents) before each biblical book, pictures, subscriptions at the end of each book, and numbers of στιχοι to Paul.^[4] It also contains one leaf from Cyril's Homilies, and two others later.^[4]

According to Scrivener it is a beautiful copy.^[3]

Text

The Greek text of the codex is a representative of the Byzantine text-type. Aland placed it in Category V.^[5]

It contains the Comma Johanneum added by a later hand.^[4]

Elijah Hixson

In the article The Greek Manuscripts of the Comma Johanneum (1 John 5:7–8) by Elijah Hixson, he says the following:

GA 221 was also a complete surprise when I looked into it. It is the oldest manuscript (10th century) with the youngest CJ. It’s in Oxford, and Klaus Wachtel (Der byzantinische Text, 319–320) observed that Henry Coxe’s catalogue of manuscripts printed in 1854 explicitly states that this manuscript lacks 1 John 5:7.The implication of the note that 221 explicitly lacks the CJ is clear: the CJ looks to be added after that catalogue was prepared. The one published in 1854. I mean, for all I know Charles Spurgeon was alive in time to see this manuscript before somebody added in the CJ.

So we have the age of this reading balancing upon the words of Henry Coxe according to Hixson (and ultimately Wachtel). The marginal note has:

οὕτως ἐν ἄλλῳ

ὅτι τρεῖς εἰσιν οἱ μαρτυροῦντες

εν τῷ οὐρανῷ, ὁ πατήρ, ὁ λόγος,

καὶ τὸ ἅγιον πνεῦμα· καὶ οὗτοι οἱ

τρεῖς ἕν εἰσι· καὶ τρεῖς εἰσιν οἱ

μαρτυροῦντες ἐν τῇ γῇ, τὸ

πνεῦμα, (k.t.l)

At the top of the note is says:

οὕτως ἐν ἄλλῳ (thus in another)

When I went through this note, I didn't sense that it was a modern marginal note. The writing seems very much equivalent to 10th-15th century writing. I cannot compare the main manuscript with the margin as the only source I could find of this mss anywhere was in Hixson's article.

James Snapp Jr

James Snapp Jr. said on his blog:

In GA 221, a manuscript from the 900s, the Comma Johanneum is written in the margin, but it appears that the Comma Johanneum arrived there rather recently, considering that (as Hixson reports) a description of GA 221 made in 1854 says that the manuscript does not have the Comma Johanneum, with nothing said about a margin-note.

History

The manuscript was brought by Busbeck from Constantinople (along with Minuscule 222).^[4]

The manuscript was examined by Coxe, Scrivener, and C. R. Gregory (1887).^[4]

It is currently housed at the Bodleian Library (Canon. Gr. 110), at Oxford.^[2]^[7]
