Commentary

Italics

Three extra italics appear here in Matthew 1:6 when comparing the 1611 to the post 1769 KJV editions.

And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her (that had been the wife) of Urias;

Whereas in the original 1611 it has only italics on "that had been" not including "the wife".

The KJV of 1611 had much less italics than later KJV editions. There are very good reasons for the inclusion of italics, and many times they make the verse much more understandable.

The wife of Uriah was Bathsheba, who David committed adultery with. David also had Uriah killed in battle so to cover up the illegitimate pregnancy. Uriah was a Hittite.

Begat/Begot

ἐγέννησε is translated as begat in the KJV 1611 and KJV 1900, and begot in the KJV 2016. From Middle English begeten, biȝeten, from Old English beġietan ‎(“to get, find, acquire, attain, receive, take, seize, happen, beget”), from Proto-Germanic *bigetaną ‎(“to find, seize”), equivalent to be- +‎ get. Cognate with Old Saxon bigitan ‎(“to find, seize”), Old High German bigezan ‎(“to gain, achieve, win, procure”).
