Acts 19:35 in the 1611 King James Version

The 1611 says:

the city of the Ephesians is † a worshipper of the great goddess Diana....

The marginal note says:

||† Gre. the temple keeper.

In an article by Timothy Berg The 5 Types Of Marginal Notes In The 1611 KJV, he lists several marginal notes that he said "each of these and many other cases, the note signals not just an alternate translation that might be equally probable, but a more literal translation that they have opted against for various reasons." In the previous context, (see also 1 Peter 3:6 Berg has made allusions that the translators didn't follow a more "literal reading" because of bias and also unknown reasons. Berg says of this verse:

Or, for example, in Acts 19:35, the text reads, "the city of the Ephesians is † a worshipper of the great goddess Diana." But the † symbol points to a marginal note, which reads, "† Gre. the temple-keeper." BDAG notes that the word means, "honorary temple keeper," that is, "one who is responsible for the maintenance and security of a temple: ‘temple keeper.’" This was in fact the reading of the Bishop's text they revised. Yet the translators have for some reason chosen to translate the word less literally as "worshipper."

But it is clear that while the etymology of the verse in Ancient Greek is "the temple keeper", this word changed with time, as Albert Barnes explains:

Is a worshipper - νεωκόρον neōkoron Margin, temple-keeper. The word used here does not occur elsewhere in the New Testament. It is derived from νεὼς neōs for ναὸς naosa temple, and κορέω koreō to sweep, to cleanse. But among the ancients, the office of keeping their temples was by no means as humble as that of sexton is with us. It was regarded as an office of honor and dignity to have charge of the temples of the gods, and to keep them in order. The term was also given to the cities that were regarded as the special patrons or worshippers of certain gods and goddesses. They esteemed it an honor to be regarded as the special keepers of their temples and images, or as having adopted them as their tutelar divinities. Such was Ephesus in regard to Diana. It was considered to be a high honor that the city was everywhere regarded as being entrusted with the worship of Diana, or with keeping the temple regarded by the whole world as especially her own. So the comment "Yet the translators have for some reason chosen to translate the word less literally as "worshipper" reveals that Berg is ignorant of the words history.
