Commentary

In describing his ministry experiences in 2 Cor 4:8-9 Paul uses eight present participles, four pairs set in opposition to each other with a repeating ἀλλ᾿ οὐκ between each pair and a more severe word as the second in each pair:

θλιβόμενοι ἀλλ᾿ οὐ στενοχωρούμενοι,

ἀπορούμενοι ἀλλ᾿ οὐκ ἐξαπορούμενοι,

διωκόμενοι ἀλλ᾿ οὐκ ἐγκαταλειπόμενοι,
