A comparison of Matthew and Mark unambiguously demonstrates that Matthew intended to convey that the disciples placed Jesus there. This is a common occurrence in the synoptic gospels.

Matthew is not the only account of this event and Mark’s account reads thus:

καὶ ἤγαγον τὸν πῶλον πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν, καὶ ἐπέβαλον αὐτῷ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐπ᾽ αὐτῷ. (Μάρ. 11:7)

Mark clearly says Jesus sat on the colt.

Luke has:

καὶ ἤγαγον αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν· καὶ ἐπιρρίψαντες ἑαυτῶν τὰ ἱμάτια ἐπὶ τὸν πῶλον, ἐπεβίβασαν τὸν Ἰησοῦν. (Λουκ. 19:35)

Luke, like Matthew, has them setting Jesus thereon.

Matthew's phrasing could be interpreted as implying that the disciples sat on the donkey and colt, which is nonsensical both in appearance and within the context. However it could be interpreted in this manner. Another possibility is that the disciples placed Jesus on the donkey and colt, with the object in the accusative case being implied. A comparison of Matthew and Mark unambiguously demonstrates that Matthew intended to convey that the disciples placed Jesus there. This is a common occurrence in the synoptic gospels.

Because "thereon" is plural, it can't refer to just the colt. It refers to both the ass and the colt. And it is a fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9 where he is "riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass."

"They put, επεκαθισαν [TR Greek 3rd person plural]. Some examples [copies] read, επεκαθισεν [3rd person singular], insedit [Latin 3rd person singular of the Greek]. And others return εκαθισεν [sit down, as in Mark 11:7 3rd singular], sedit [Latin matching]. More than this, επανω αυτων [TR Greek] Vulg. [Vulgate] reads επανω αυτον [upon him] that is to say τον ιησουν [Jesus] which reading the Syrian interpreter[translation] makes, as is certainly the most simple. Frobenius struck/printed επανω αυτης [singular feminine], upon her, an ass that is. But from the other Evangelists it is clear that the Lord was carried, not by an ass, but by a colt. I therefore read αυτον in the single number, with the old interpreter, or (as the Greek codices have it) αυτων in the plural number, and I refer to the clothes on which layers he sat, or on the ass & colt, so that Matthew agrees with Zechariah. There is another such variant in Matthew 21:7, ἐπεκάθισεν vs. ἐπεκάθισαν—the difference between one person setting Jesus on the colt for the triumphal entry (Stephanus) and two or more people doing it (Scrivener).
