+
The 1611 says:
+
:||Because strait is the gate.....
+
The marginal note says:
+
:||''Or, how''
+
+
In an article by Timothy Berg ''[https://bloggingtheword.com/the-blog/the-types-of-marginal-notes-in-the-1611-kjv The 5 Types Of Marginal Notes In The 1611 KJV]'', he lists several marginal notes that he said "each of these and many other cases, the note signals not just an alternate translation that might be equally probable, but a more literal translation that they have opted against for various reasons." In the previous context, (see also [[1 Peter 3:6]] Berg has made allusions that the translators didn't follow a more "literal reading" because of bias and also unknown reasons.

[[Image:Matthew_7_14_Stephanus_1550.jpg|thumb|right|250px|Matthew 7:14 in the [[1550 AD|1550]] Greek New Testament of Stephanus]]
+
This Marginal note is there because the 1550 of Stephanus has it in the Margin. The main text has ὅτι while the margin has τί. It can be easily seen that the omicron "ὅ" could have been accidently omitted:
+
+
:ὅτι
+
:-τί
+
+
The English reformation period bibles follow the same reading as the KJV, but Wycliffe has "How".
+
+
Gill has:
+
:Some read the words, as the Syriac, Arabic, and Vulgate Latin, with a note of admiration, "how strait is the gate!" &c. and so some copies.
+
+
The Pulpit Commentary says:
+
:Verse 14. - Because (ὅτι); for (Revised Version); "many ancient authorities read, How narrow is the gate, etc." (Revised Version margin). The reading, "how" (τί) is much easier, as avoiding the difficulty of the connection of this verse with the preceding, but probably ὅτι is right. The connection is either that it is parallel to the first ὅτι, and thus gives a second reason for decision in entering through the narrow gate; or, and better, that it gives the reason for the statement in ver. 13b - many pass along the wrong way because the right way requires at the very outset so much determination and afterwards so much self denial. Strait is the gate, and narrow is the way; narrow is the gate, and straitened the way (Revised Version).

Matthew 7:14 in the 1611 King James Version
Matthew 7:14 in the 1611 King James Version

The 1611 says:

||Because strait is the gate.....

The marginal note says:

||Or, how

In an article by Timothy Berg The 5 Types Of Marginal Notes In The 1611 KJV, he lists several marginal notes that he said "each of these and many other cases, the note signals not just an alternate translation that might be equally probable, but a more literal translation that they have opted against for various reasons." In the previous context, (see also 1 Peter 3:6 Berg has made allusions that the translators didn't follow a more "literal reading" because of bias and also unknown reasons.

Matthew 7:14 in the 1550 Greek New Testament of Stephanus
Matthew 7:14 in the 1550 Greek New Testament of Stephanus

This Marginal note is there because the 1550 of Stephanus has it in the Margin. The main text has ὅτι while the margin has τί. It can be easily seen that the omicron "ὅ" could have been accidently omitted:

ὅτι
-τί

The English reformation period bibles follow the same reading as the KJV, but Wycliffe has "How".

Gill has:

Some read the words, as the Syriac, Arabic, and Vulgate Latin, with a note of admiration, "how strait is the gate!" &c. and so some copies.

The Pulpit Commentary says:

Verse 14.
