Beza's 1598 footnote says:

19 Ad Martham & Mariam, πρὸς τὰς περὶ Μάρθαν καὶ Μαρίαν, Ad Verbum, Ad eas quae erant circa Martham & Mariam. Vulg. ad Martham & Mariam, πρὸς Μάρθαν καὶ Μαρίαν, de quo dicendi genere, Græcis familiari, vide Act. 13.13. Sed ita proculdubio significantur fœminæ etiam aliæ & amicae aut etiam cognatae quae de more luctu potius intendebant quam moderabantur.

Translated as:

19, "To Martha and Mary" (Latin), the Greek text reads πρὸς τὰς περὶ Μάρθαν καὶ Μαρίαν, literally "to those who were around Martha and Mary." The Vulgate renders it as "ad Martham & Mariam" (to Martha and Mary), based on πρὸς Μάρθαν καὶ Μαρίαν. This manner of expression, common in Greek, can be seen in Acts 13:13. However, it undoubtedly refers also to other women, either friends or relatives, who, as was customary, were more focused on mourning than on restraining their grief.

Meyer's

πρὸς τὰς περὶ Μ. κ. Μ.] is not quite identical in force with πρὸς τὴν Μ. κ. Μ. (so Lachmann after B. C. L. X. א.), but describes the two sisters with their surroundings (Bernhardy, p. 263; Kühner, ad Xen. Mem. ii. 4. 2; comp. Acts 13:13). The words might also denote the sisters alone, according to later Greek usage (see Valckenaer, Schol. ad Acts 13:13; Lehrs, Quaest. Ep. p. 28 ff.); this usage, however, is quite foreign to the New Testament, besides that, in the present connection, the expression employed has its special propriety, they being men who had come. It implies, moreover, that the household was one of a higher class.
ἵνα παραμ. αὐτ.] The expression of sympathy and consolation, which was connected with definite formalities, lasted usually seven days (1 Samuel 31:13; 1 Chronicles 10:12; Jdt 16:23). See Lightfoot, p. 1070 ff.

Vincent's Word Studies

To Martha and Mary (πρὸς τὰς περὶ Μάρθαν καὶ Μαρίαν).
Literally, to those about Martha and Mary; a Greek idiom for Martha and Mary and their companions, or attendants. Compare οἱ περὶ Παῦλον, Paul and his companions (Acts 13:13). Somewhat analogous is our familiar idiom when we speak of going to visit a household: I am going to Smith's or Brown's, by which we include the head of the household with its members. Westcott and Hort and Tregelles, however, read πρὸς τὴν Μάρθαν κ. Μ., to Martha and Mary. So also the Revisers' text.

Etymology of Come

come(v.)
elementary intransitive verb of motion, Old English cuman "to move with the purpose of reaching, or so as to reach, some point; to arrive by movement or progression;" also "move into view, appear, become perceptible; come to oneself, recover; arrive; assemble" (class IV strong verb; past tense cuom, com, past participle cumen), from Proto-Germanic *kwem- (source also of Old Saxon cuman, Old Frisian kuma, Middle Dutch comen, Dutch komen, Old High German queman, German kommen, Old Norse koma, Gothic qiman), from PIE root *gwa- "to go, come."
The substitution of Middle English -o- for Old English -u- was a scribal habit before minims to avoid misreading the letters in the old style handwriting, which jammed them together (see U). Modern past tense form came is Middle English, probably from Old Norse kvam, replacing Old English cuom.
Meaning "to happen, occur" is from early 12c. (come to pass "happen, occur" is from 1520s). As an invitation to action, c. 1300; as a call or appeal to a person (often in expanded forms: "come, come," "come, now"), mid-14c.

NKJV

John 11:19

The KJV has “came to” while the NKJV changes it to “had joined the women around.” “Had joined” translates ἐληλύθεισαν (from ἔρχομαι, “to come”). This is a departure from the simpler “had come” (as in the KJV). The Greek verb ἐληλύθεισαν (from ἔρχομαι) means “had come” or “had arrived.” The NKJV’s “had joined” implies a specific action of uniting or becoming part of a group, which adds a nuance not present in the Greek. ἔρχομαι denotes movement or arrival, not necessarily “joining” in the sense of becoming a member of a group. This choice risks overinterpreting the verb, deviating from the TR’s straightforward meaning.

The phrase πρὸς τὰς περὶ Μάρθαν καὶ Μαρίαν is an idiomatic Greek construction meaning “to those around Martha and Mary” or “to Martha and Mary and their associates.” As Beza’s annotation and Vincent’s Word Studies notes suggest (see John 11:19), it likely includes other women (friends or relatives) mourning with Martha and Mary. The NKJV’s “the women around Martha and Mary” explicitly identifies τὰς as “the women,” which is reasonable given the feminine article and the context of mourning (a culturally female-associated activity in first-century Judea, as per John 11:31).

The NKJV’s phrasing—“had joined the women around”—implies that “many of the Jews” (a mixed or unspecified group) joined a distinct group of women already gathered around Martha and Mary. However, the Greek suggests that “many of the Jews” themselves include or are the τὰς περὶ Μάρθαν καὶ Μαρίαν (the women around Martha and Mary). In other words, the Jews who “had come” are likely the same group as “those [women] around Martha and Mary,” not a separate group joining them. The NKJV’s wording risks creating a false distinction between the Jews and the women.

The NKJV’s “had joined the women around” suggests a sequential action (Jews joining an already-formed group), which the Greek does not explicitly support. This could mislead readers about the composition and action of the group.

So,

  • “Had joined” misrepresents the verb ἐληλύθεισαν, adding a nuance of integration not in the Greek.
  • “The women around” implies a separate group of women that the Jews joined, which the Greek syntax (πολλοὶ ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων as the subject) does not clearly support.

The KJV’s “came to Martha and Mary” simplifies the περὶ idiom but accurately conveys the action (ἐληλύθεισαν, “had come”) and the destination (πρὸς τὰς περὶ, the group centered on Martha and Mary). It avoids adding unwarranted nuances like “joining” or separating the Jews from the women. “Came to” can flexibly imply “gathering around” or “assembling with,” which aligns with the περὶ idiom without overtranslating it.

The NKJV aims to clarify the περὶ idiom but introduces ambiguity about the group’s composition and action, diverging from the TR’s straightforward meaning.
