The following is a list of Christian Church Fathers.  Catholics generally regard the Patristic period to have closed with the death of John of Damascus, a Doctor of the Church, in 749.  However, Eastern Orthodox Christians believe that the Patristic period is ongoing.  Therefore, the list is split into two tables. While these people are called "Church fathers" this is more accurately defined as "Church writers". Many are fathers of Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodox, and Reformed teachings, but a true believer will trace their beliefs back to Scripture, and only the writings of the New Testament should be considered authoritative; although some men have agreed in part with scripture.

Current revision
