１ Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

またヘロデ王の日に、ユダヤのベツレヘムにイエスの生まれ給ひしとき、見よ、博士等東よりエロソルマに詣（いたり）て、

２Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

云ひけるは、産まれ給へる彼、ユダヤ人の王は何処（いずこ）におはすや。そは我等東にてその星を見たれば、彼に平伏さんために至りたればなり。　　　　　　　

３When Herod the king had heard [these things], he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

然るにヘロデ王聞きて当惑せしめられき、またすべてエロソルマも彼と共〔なりき〕。

４And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

かくて彼はすべての民の祭司長等及び学者等を集めて、キリストは何処に生まれ給ふべきやを、彼等に尋ねたり。

５節 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,

乃ち彼等いへり、ユダヤのベツレヘムに。そはかく豫言者によりて録（しる）されたばなり。　　　　　　　　　　

６節 And thou Bethlehem, [in] the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

されば、汝ベツレヘム、ユダの地よ、汝は太守のいちにて決して最少さき者にはあらず。そは我が民イスラエルを牧すべき太守、汝(なんじ)より出で来るべければなり。　　

７節 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

そのときヘロデ密かに博士等を召して、星の現はれし時を突き止めたり。

８節 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found [him], bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

かくて彼等をベツレヘムに遣（つか）はしていへり、往きて幼児に就きて審らかに捜（さぐ）れ、また見出さば、我に報ぜよ。割れもそこに到りて彼に平伏すべし。

９節 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

乃ち彼等は王に聞きて往けり。かくて見よ、東にて彼等が見たるかの星、彼等を導き、幼児のおはす処の上に到りて止まれり。

１０節 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

されば彼等は星を見て、一方ならず大なる喜もて喜べり。

１１節 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

かくて家に入りしとき、幼児をその母マリアと共に見出だしたり。されば彼等は伏して彼に平伏し、また宝を開きて黄金また乳香また没薬（もつやく）など、礼物を捧げたり。　　　　　　

１２節 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

また彼等は夢にて、ヘロデの許に立ち戻る勿れ、との誥（つげ）を蒙りたれば、別の道を経て己が国に立ち退けり。

１３節 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

また彼等の立ち退きしとき、見よ、主の使夢にてヨセフに現はれ、云いけるは、起きて幼児とその母とを携へ、エジプトに遁れよ。かくて我が汝にいはんときまでそこにあれ。そはヘロデ将に幼児を索（もと）めて亡ぼさんとすればなり。

１４節 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:

乃ち彼は起きて夜に乗じ、幼児とその母とを携へてエジプトに立ち退けり。

１５節 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

かくてヘロデの生の終まで彼処にありき。これ豫言者によりて、主より謂われしことの成就せらるるためなりしなり、云い給ひけるは、我エジプトより我が子を呼べり。　　　　　　

１６節 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.

そのときヘロデ、博士等に欺かれたることを見て、甚だ恚れり。乃ち〔人を〕使はして博士等に突き留めたるところの時に随ひて、ベツレヘムとその境のうちなる、二歳またそれ以下の童等をすべて殺したり。

１７節 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,

そのとき豫言者エレミヤより謂はれしことを成就せられき、云いけるは、

１８節 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping [for] her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

大いなる哭（なげき）また嘆きまた悲の声、ラマにて聞えたり。ラケルその児等のために嘆きて慰めらるるを欲せざりき、そは彼等のあらざりしが故なり。　　　　　　　

１９節 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

かくてヘロデの生の終りければ、見よ、主の使エジプトにてヨセフに現はれ、

２０節 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.

云ひけるは、起きて幼児とその母とを携へ、且つイスラエルの地に往け。そは幼児の魂を索ねつつありし人々死にたればなり。

２１節 And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.

乃ち彼は起きて幼児とその母とを携へて、イスラエルの地に入り来れり。

２２節 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:

されどアケラオ、その父ヘロデに代りて、ユダヤに王たることを聞きければ、そこに往くを懼れしが夢にて誥を蒙り、ガリラヤの地方に立ち退けり。

２３節 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.

かくて彼は到りて、ナザレと云はるる市（まち）に住めり。是れ彼はナザレ人と呼ばるべしと、豫言者等によりて謂はれしことの成就せらるるためなりしなり。
