Commentary

The capital "S" vs the small "s"

Some editions of the King James Version have “spirit” not “Spirit” here. The Pure Cambridge Edition of the KJV has “spirit” here with the “s” in lowercase. Beza's 1598 Latin and Vulgate both capitalize the “S.”

Bible Protector

Bible Protector (Matthew Verschuur), pointed out that it is incorrect to imply that the word "spirit" indicates the human spirit. The word spirit lower case still indicates the work of the Holy Ghost into the human spirit. Some examples of God's work called "spirit":

• 1 Corinthians 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
• 2 Corinthians 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
• 1 John 4:6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

Cambridge University Press

Jerry L. Hooper of Cambridge University Press in 1985 claimed the small "s" was a print error in previous KJV editions. Mr Hooper is in error to assume that this is just a modern print error. [2]

“I don't know how to say this to you other than to be perfectly honest. We are very grateful to you even though you have put your finger on a matter of some embarras[s]ment regarding the lower case 's' in Spirit, reference 1Jn.,5:8.

“There is no way of knowing how many years this particular edition has carried the misprint. Our Bible department in England was astounded that this has never been noticed before. I assumed some mysterious theological question was involved and overlooked the obvious in my search of commentaries.

“This error of course, will be corrected in subsequent printings thanks to your sharp eyes. Again, we are very grateful.”

In text of Germanos, the diataxis of Anastasius’ it says:

“Et ideo postquam hoc dicit, accepto sancto calice, fundente in eum diacono uinum et acquam, iterum dicit sacerdos: exiuit de latere Iesu sanguis et aqua, et qui uidit testimonium perhibuit et uerum est testimonium eius (John 19:34–35). Deinde post hoc, posito sancto calice in diuina mensa, digito ostendit intendens in occisum agnum per panem et in effusum sanguinem per uinum, iterum dicens, quia: tres sunt qui testimonium dant: spiritus, acqua et sanguis, et tres unum sunt (1 John 5:8), nunc et semper et in sæcula sæculorum.”
