Matthew 2:1 is the first verse of the second chapter of the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament. The previous verse ends with Jesus being named by Joseph; this verse marks the clear start of a new narrative. This verse deals with the arrival of the Wise Men in Jerusalem meeting with Herod the Great. This story of the Wise Men continues until Matthew 2:12.
 +
 +
Birth of Jesus
 +
The verse contains the full coverage given in Matthew to the birth of Jesus. Unlike Luke, Matthew pays very little attention to this event, focusing far more on what occurred before and after.
 +
 +
Bethlehem
 +
This is the first point in the Gospel that Bethlehem is mentioned. That it is specified as being "in Judea" to the need to distinguish it from another Bethlehem in Zebulun, likely the modern town of Beit Lahna.
 +
 +
Arrival of the Wise Men
 +
Matthew never says how many Wise Men there are, just that there are more than one. Traditions such as the "magi" being kings and having names developed later.  The only other place the word occurs in the New Testament is at Acts 13:6 and Acts 13:8:
 +
 +
* Acts 13:6 And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain <u>sorcerer (μάγον)</u>, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Barjesus:
 +
 +
* Acts 13:8 But Elymas the <u>sorcerer (μάγος)</u> (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.
 +
 +
Wise men μάγοι. μάγοι has the Proto Indo-European root meg from which come words like master, magistrate, mega, magnify, magnificent, magnitude, majority, magician (a great one), mayor, magnates etc. Mechanism, machine, make etc... also have Mag as a common root, as also the large shark 'Megalodon' meaning large, great. The Greek letter Omega is O-mega (omicron is O-micron - small). Magi basically means "great" in Greek and latin magnas means great. Magic etymology most probably came from power, ability, and facility.

Commentary

Matthew 2:1 is the first verse of the second chapter of the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament. The previous verse ends with Jesus being named by Joseph; this verse marks the clear start of a new narrative. This verse deals with the arrival of the Wise Men in Jerusalem meeting with Herod the Great. This story of the Wise Men continues until Matthew 2:12.

Birth of Jesus

The verse contains the full coverage given in Matthew to the birth of Jesus. Unlike Luke, Matthew pays very little attention to this event, focusing far more on what occurred before and after.

Bethlehem

This is the first point in the Gospel that Bethlehem is mentioned. That it is specified as being "in Judea" to the need to distinguish it from another Bethlehem in Zebulun, likely the modern town of Beit Lahna.

Arrival of the Wise Men

Matthew never says how many Wise Men there are, just that there are more than one. Traditions such as the "magi" being kings and having names developed later. The only other place the word occurs in the New Testament is at Acts 13:6 and Acts 13:8:

 • Acts 13:6 And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer (μάγον), a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Barjesus:
 • Acts 13:8 But Elymas the sorcerer (μάγος) (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.
