- 1 And seeing the crowds, He went up on a mountain, and when he was seated His disciples came to Him.
- 2 Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:
- 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, because theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
- 4 Blessed are those who mourn, because they will be comforted.
- 5 Blessed are the meek, because they will inherit the earth.
- 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, because they will be filled.
- 7 Blessed are the merciful, because they will obtain mercy.
- 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, because they will see God.
- 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, because they will be called the children of God.
- 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
- 11 Blessed are you, when men revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for My sake.
- 12 Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, because your reward in heaven is great, because they also persecuted the prophets which were before you.
- 13 You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how shall it be salted? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and to be trampled underfoot by men.
- 14 You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
- 15 Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
- 16 Therefore let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
- 17 Do not think that I am here to destroy the law or the prophets. I am not here to destroy, but to fulfil.
- 18 Because truthfully I say unto you, until heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law, till all is fulfilled.
- 19 Whoever therefore breaks one of these least commandments, and teaches men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, they shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
- 20 Because I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter into the kingdom of heaven.
- 21 You have heard that it was said to those of old, “you shall not murder, and whosoever murders shall be in danger of the judgment.”
- 22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever shall say to his brother, “Raca”, shall be in danger of the council. But whoever shall say, “You fool!” shall be in danger of hell fire.
- 23 Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,
- 24 Leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
- 25 Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.
- 26 I say to you truthfully, you will by no means come out of there until you have paid the last penny.
- 27 You have heard that it was said by them of old, “You shall not commit adultery.”
- 28 But I say to you that whoever looks on a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
- 29 And if your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out, and cast it from you; because it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than your whole body to be thrown into hell.
- 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; because it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than your whole body should be thrown into hell.
- 31 It has been said, whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.
- 32 But I say to you, that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.
- 33 Again, you have heard that it has been said by them of old, “You shalt not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.”
- 34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, because it is God's throne;
- 35 nor by the earth, because it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King.
- 36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black.
- 37 But let your speech be, Yes, yes; No, no. Because whatever is more than these is from evil.
- 38 You have heard that it has been said, “An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.”
- 39 But I tell you that you should not resist those who are wicked. But whoever shall slap you on your right cheek, turn to other to him also.
- 40 And if any man would sue you and take away your coat, let him have your cloak also.
- 41 And whoever would make you to go one mile, go two with him.
- 42 Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.
- 43 You have heard that it has been said, “You shall love your neighbour, and hate your enemy.”
- 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you, and persecute you,
- 45 that you may be the children of your Father in heaven; because He makes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
- 46 Because if you love them which love you, what reward do you obtain? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
- 47 And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even tax collectors do so?
- 48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
