- 1 “Is there not an appointed time for man on earth? Are not his days also like the days of a hired servant?
- 2 Like a servant who earnestly desires the shade, and like a hired servant who looks for his wages,
- 3 So am I made to inherit months of emptiness, and miserable nights have been appointed to me.
- 4 When I lie down I say, ‘When will I arise, and the night be over?’ Then I am full of tossing back and forth until the dawn.
- 5 My flesh is covered with worms and chunks of dust; my skin is cracked, and has become sickening.
- 6 “My days are faster than a weaver’s shuttle, and are concluded without hope.
- 7 O remember that my life is wind! My eye will no longer see good.
- 8 The eye of him that has seen me will see me no longer; your eyes are upon me, then I am gone.
- 9 As the cloud disappears and fades away, so likewise he that goes down to the grave will not come up.
- 10 He will never again revisit to his house, nor will his place know him anymore.
- 11 “Therefore I will not restrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
- 12 Am I a sea, or a whale, that you set a guard over me?
- 13 When I say, ‘My bed will comfort me, my couch will alleviate my suffering,’
- 14 Then You scare me with dreams, and terrify me with visions,
- 15 So that my soul chooses strangling and death instead of my life.
- 16 I hate it, I will not always live. Leave me alone, because my days are so empty.
- 17 “What is man, that You should exult him, and that You should set Your heart on him?
- 18 and that You should visit him every morning, and test him every moment?
- 19 How long will You not depart from me, nor leave me alone until I swallow down my dribble?
- 20 I have sinned, what can I do to You, O protector of men? Why have You set me as Your target, so that I am a burden to myself?
- 21 And why do You not pardon my transgression, and take away my iniquity? As for now I will sleep in the dust, and You will seek me in the morning but I will no longer be.”
