TR: 2 John 1:1-3 The elder <presbuteros> unto the elect <eklektos> lady <Kuria> and <kai> her <autos> children <teknon>, whom <hos> I <ego> love <agapao> in <en> the truth <aletheia>; and <kai> not <ou> I <ego> only <monos>, but <alla> also <kai> all <pas> they that have known <ginosko> the truth <aletheia>; For <dia> the truth's sake <aletheia>, which <ho> dwelleth <meno> in <en> us <hemin>, and <kai> shall be <esomai> with <meta> us <hemon> for <eis> ever <aion>. QT: Part 1 of 4 – Say hello
1 The a elder to the b elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth; 2 For the truth's sake, which dwells in us, and shall be with us for ever. 3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. 

a Older mature believer in Christ. Not all older believers are mature. 
b A distinguished lady, not allegorical for a church or the church. History and context indicate Mary the mother of Jesus. If Mary, then her children are the brothers and sisters of Jesus of Nazareth, which include James and Jude, who wrote two other letter in the New Testament.

KJ: 4-6 I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father. And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

QT: Part 2 of 4 – Recognize truth
4 I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father. 5 And now I beseech you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. 6 And this is love, that we walk after his a commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it. 

a Love one another is a basic theme in all of John’s writings. Walking in the truth (Jesus) enables us to obey this commandment. To love one another as Jesus loves us is supernatural. 

TK:　 4 私たちが父なる神から戒めを授かって従ったように、あなたの子供たちも真理に従って歩んでいると知って、私

の心は大きな喜びで溢れました。 5 そこで婦人よ、これは新しい事ではなく私たちが救われた時から持っている戒めで

すが、どうか互に愛し合って下さい。 6愛とは、父なる神の戒めに従って生きることです。 また戒めとは、信仰を持った

時から聞いていたように、愛によって生きる事です。

TR: 2 John 1:7-11 For <hoti> many <polus> deceivers <planos> are entered <eiserchomai> into <eis> the world <kosmos>, who <ho> confess <homologeo> not <me> that Jesus <Iesous> Christ <Christos> is come <erchomai> in <en> the flesh <sarx>. This <houtos> is <esti> a deceiver <planos> and <kai> an antichrist <antichristos>. Look <blepo> to yourselves <heautou>, that <hina me> we lose <apollumi> not <hina me> those things which <hos> we have wrought <ergazomai>, but <alla> that we receive <apolambano> a full <pleres> reward <misthos>. QT: Part 3 of 4 – Recognize deception

This is a deceiver and an antichrist. 8 a Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have worked for, but that we receive a full reward. 9 Whosoever transgresses, and abides not in the doctrine of Christ, has not God. They that abide in the doctrine of Christ, have both the Father and the Son. 10 If there come any to you, and bring not this doctrine, receive them not into your house, neither bid them God speed: 11 For they that bid them God speed is partaker of their evil deeds. 

a Important passage for the doctrine of rewards: we can lose them by earning only a partial reward or no rewards. This is similar to non-biblical teaching of karma. 

TK:　 7 というのは、キリスト・イエスが肉体を取って来られた事を認めないで、人を惑わす者が大勢世に現

われて来たからです。そのような者は詐欺師で、反キリストと呼ばれる者です。 8 私たちが苦労して獲得し

た物を失なわず豊かな報いを受けられるように、よく注意して下さい。9 誰でも罪を犯し、キリストの教え

に背いて暮らしているような者の内に神は居ません。しかしキリストの教えに従って歩んでいる者には、父な

る神とその御子が共に居られるのです。10 この教えを信じない者が誰か訪ねて来たら、その人を家に入れて

も、挨拶してもいけません。 11 そのような者に挨拶する人は、その悪い行いに与かる事になるからです。

The children <teknon> of thy <sou> elect <eklektos> sister <adelphe> greet <aspazomai> thee <se>. Amen <amen>.
KJ: 12-13 Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full. The children of thy elect sister greet thee. Amen.

QT: Part 4 of 4 – Say goodbye

12 Having many things to write to you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come to you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full. 13 The children of thy a elect sister greet you. Amen. 

a John keeps the focus on Christ, not letting pride enter in due to the personal relationship between him and Mary, the surrogate mother and son relationship given to them at the foot of the cross. Mary would be in her twilight years or 80s and II John written before 70 AD. 
Personal application: Let our words and actions earnestly pursue truth and love. Truth without love is hypocrisy, love without truth is shallow. God’s love results in grace (gift received at Christ’s expense, or given what we don’t deserve – forgiveness and restoration), and mercy (not given what we do deserve – unforgiveness and judgment). May God’s love be demonstrated by our words and actions. Truth always proceeds love and is the basis for God’s love. God’s love is demonstrated to man through Jesus Christ, who is the truth. Man’s love toward God is demonstrated by our obedience to the truth and loving one another. 
TK:　 12 書くべき事は数多くありますが紙と墨で書こうとは思いません。むしろあなた方の所に行き、共に

喜びに満たされるように面と向かって話し合いたいと期待しています。 13 神に選ばれたあなた方の姉妹の子
