The word "hate" in this verse does not mean "to despise". The word meaning has changed since the reformation translations

When the KJV was translated this word meant "love less". The verse in a modern day translation should be translated something like the following:

If anyone comes to Me and does not love less his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.
