1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham:
1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

2 Abraham begot Isaac, and Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers.
2 saying, "Where is He who is born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him."

3 And Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram.
3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

4 And Ram begot Amminadab, and Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon.
4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

5 And Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, and Obed begot Jesse,
5 And they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is what is written by the prophet:

6 and Jesse begot David the king. And David the king begot Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah.
6 'And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the princes of Judah. For out of you shall come a Governor who shall rule My people Israel.'"

7 And Solomon begot Rehoboam, and Rehoboam begot Abijah, and Abijah begot Asa.
7 Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, diligently inquired of them what time the star appeared.

8 And Asa begot Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat begot Joram, and Joram begot Uzziah.
8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search diligently for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also."

9 And Uzziah begot Jotham, and Jotham begot Ahaz, and Ahaz begot Hezekiah.
9 When they had heard the king, they departed. And behold, the star that they saw in the East went before them, until it came and stood over where the young Child was.

10 And Hezekiah begot Manasseh, and Manasseh begot Amon, and Amon begot Josiah.
10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.

11 And Josiah begot Jeconiah and his brothers about the time they were carried away to Babylon.
11 And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary, His mother, and fell down and worshipped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jeconiah begot Shealtiel, and Shealtiel begot Zerubbabel.
12 And being warned by God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed to their own country another way.

13 And Zerubbabel begot Abiud, and Abiud begot Eliakim, and Eliakim begot Azor.
13 And when they had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Arise, and take the young Child and His mother, and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word, for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him."

14 And Azor begot Zadok, and Zadok begot Achim, and Achim begot Eliud.
14 When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed into Egypt,

15 And Eliud begot Eleazar, and Eleazar begot Matthan, and Matthan begot Jacob.
15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled what was spoken from the Lord by the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt I have called My Son."

16 And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked by the wise men, was exceedingly angry and sent forth and slew all the children who were in Bethlehem and in all its surrounding area, from two years old and under, according to the time that he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the carrying away into Babylon to Christ are fourteen generations.
17 Then it was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying:

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was in this way: when His mother, Mary, was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child from the Holy Spirit.
18 "A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are no more."

19 Then Joseph, her husband, being a just man and not willing to make her a public example, was resolved to put her away secretly.
19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take to you Mary your wife, for what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
20 saying, "Arise, and take the young Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel, for those who sought the young Child's life are dead."

21 And she shall bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins."
21 And he arose, and took the young Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.

22 Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:
22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father, Herod, he was afraid to go there. However, being warned by God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee.

23 "Behold, a virgin shall be with child and shall bring forth a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which being interpreted is "God with us."
23 And he came and dwelled in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled what was spoken by the prophets: "He shall be called a Nazarene."

24 Then Joseph, being raised from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had told him and took to him his wife,

25 and did not know her until she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.
