1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus,
2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.
2 and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works display themselves in him.
3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.
3 Because, Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife.
4 But He replied and said, “It is written, ‘Man will not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
4 Because, John said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.
5 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, and set Him on a pinnacle of the temple,
5 And when he wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowds, because, they considered him to be a prophet.
6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. Because it is written: ‘He will give His angels orders concerning You,and, ‘in their hands they will hold You up, lest at any time You strike Your foot against a stone.’”
6 But when Herod’s birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod.
7 Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’”
7 So he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.
8 Again, the devil took Him up onto a very high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
8 So she being instructed beforehand by her mother said, “Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter.
9 And he said to Him, “I will give You all these things, if You will fall down and worship me.”
9 And the king was grieved: nevertheless because of the oath’s sake and those who sat with him at the table, he commanded it to be given to her.
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Leave Satan! Because it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only shall you serve.’”
10 So he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.
11 Then the devil left Him, and, behold, angels came and ministered to Him.
11 And his head was brought on a platter, and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
12 Now when Jesus had heard that John had been thrown into prison, He departed to Galilee.
12 Then his disciples came, and took away the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
13 And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea coast, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali,
13 When Jesus heard this, He departed from there by boat into a deserted place by Himself. But when the crowds heard of it, they followed Him on foot from the cities.
14 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying:
14 And Jesus went out and saw a large crowd; and was moved with compassion for them and He healed their sick.
15 “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles:
15 Now when it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, “This is a desert place, and the hour is already late. Send the crowds away, that they may go into the villages and buy sustenance for themselves.”
16 The people who sat in darkness have seen a great Light, and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned.”
16 But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to leave. You give them something to eat.
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, “Repent, because the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
17 And they said to Him, “We have only five loaves, and two fish with us.”
18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; because they were fishermen.
18 He said, “Bring them here to Me.
19 And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
19 Then He commanded the crowds to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke, and gave the loaves to His disciples; and the disciples to the crowds.
20 And they immediately left their nets, and followed Him.
20 So they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained.
21 And going on from there, He saw two more brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and He called them.
21 Now those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
22 And immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.
22 And immediately Jesus made His disciples to get into a boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away.
23 Then Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all types of sickness and every kind of disease among the people.
23 And when He had sent the crowds away, He went up on a mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was there alone.
24 And His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him every sick person who was afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were possessed with demons, those who were insane, and paralytics; and He healed them.
24 But the boat was now in the midst of the sea, tossed by the waves, because the wind was contrary.
25 And large crowds of people followed Him from Galilee, and from Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.
25 Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.
26 And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a spirit!” And they shouted out through fear.
27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be cheerful! It is Me; do not be afraid.”
28 And Peter replied to Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, tell me to come to You on the water.”
29 And He said, “Come. And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.
30 But when he saw the wind was strong, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he shouted out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand, and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
33 Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.”
34 And when they had crossed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.
35 And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent out into all that surrounding region, and brought to Him all who were sick,
36 and begged Him that they might only touch the edge of His clothes. And as many as touched it were made perfectly well.
