1 The same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the seaside.
1 "Then the kingdom of heaven shall be compared to ten virgins who took their lamps and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
2 And great multitudes were gathered together to Him, so that He went into a ship and sat. And the whole multitude stood on the shore.
2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
3 And He spoke many things to them in parables, saying, "Behold, a sower went forth to sow.
3 Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them,
4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the wayside. And the fowls came and devoured them up.
4 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
5 Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth. And they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth.
5 While the bridegroom delayed, they all slumbered and slept.
6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched, and because they had no root, they withered away.
6 "And at midnight there was a cry made: 'Behold, the bridegroom is coming. Go out to meet him.'
7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them.
7 Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps.
8 But others fell into good ground and brought forth fruit: some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.
8 And the foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.'
9 Who has ears to hear, let him hear."
9 But the wise answered, saying, 'No, lest there be not enough for us and you. But go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.'
10 And the disciples came and said to Him, "Why do You speak to them in parables?"
10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage, and the door was shut.
11 He answered and said to them, "Because it is given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
11 "Afterward the other virgins also came, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open to us.'
12 For whoever has, to him shall be given, and he shall have abundance. But whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him.
12 But he answered and said, 'Truly I say to you, I do not know you.'
13 Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.
13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.
14 And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says: By hearing you shall hear and shall not understand, and seeing you shall see and shall not perceive.
14 "For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling into a far country, who called his own servants and delivered to them his goods.
15 For this people's heart is callous and their ears are dull of hearing. And they have closed their eyes, lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their hearts and should be converted, and I should heal them.
15 And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to every man according to his separate ability, and immediately took his journey.
16 "But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.
16 Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them another five talents.
17 For truly I say to you that many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things that you see, and have not seen them, and to hear those things that you hear, and have not heard them.
17 And likewise he who had received two, he gained two others also.
18 "Therefore hear the parable of the sower:
18 But he who had received one went and dug in the earth and hid his lord's money.
19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside.
19 After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.
20 But he who received the seed in stony places, the same is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy.
20 "And so he who had received five talents came and brought another five talents, saying, 'Lord, you delivered to me five talents. Behold, I have gained five more talents besides them.'
21 Yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, before long he stumbles.
21 His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things; I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.'
22 Also he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.
22 He who had received two talents also came and said, 'Lord, you delivered to me two talents. Behold, I have gained two other talents besides them.'
23 But he who received seed into the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who also bears fruit and brings forth: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty."
23 His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things; I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.'
24 He presented another parable to them, saying: "The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field,
24 "Then he who had received the one talent came and said, 'Lord, I knew you, that you are a hard man, reaping where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered.
25 but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went his way.
25 And I was afraid and went and hid your talent in the earth. Behold, there you have what is yours.'
26 But when the blade had sprung up and brought forth fruit, then the weeds also appeared.
26 "His lord answered and said to him, 'You wicked and slothful servant. You knew that I reap where I did not sow and gather where I have not scattered.
27 So the servants of the landowner came and said to him, 'Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?'
27 Therefore you ought to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received my own with interest.
28 He said to them, 'An enemy has done this.' The servants said to him, 'Then do you want us to go and gather them up?'
28 Therefore take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.'
29 But he said, 'No, lest while you gather up the weeds you also uproot the wheat with them.
29 'For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he shall have abundance. But from him who does not have, even what he has shall be taken away.
30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, "First gather together the weeds and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn."'"
30 And cast the unprofitable servant into outer darkness. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
31 He presented another parable to them, saying: "The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field,
31 "When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He shall sit on the throne of His glory.
32 which indeed is the least of all seeds. But when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches."
32 And all nations shall be gathered before Him, and He shall separate them from one another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats.
33 He spoke to them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is similar to leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour until the whole was leavened."
33 And He shall set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.
34 All these things Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables. And without a parable He did not speak to them,
34 Then the King shall say to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
35 that it might be fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet, saying, "I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things that have been kept secret from the foundation of the world."
35 For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in;
36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away and went into the house. And His disciples came to Him, saying, "Declare to us the parable of the weeds of the field."
36 naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.'
37 He answered and said to them, "He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man.
37 "Then the righteous shall answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You? Or thirsty and give You drink?
38 The field is the world, the good seed are the children of the kingdom, but the weeds are the children of the wicked one.
38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in? Or naked and clothe You?
39 The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the world, and the reapers are the angels.
39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?'
40 Therefore as the weeds are gathered and burned in the fire, so shall it be in the end of this world.
40 And the King shall answer and say to them, 'Truly I say to you, because you have done it to one of the least of these My brothers, you have done it to Me.'
41 The Son of Man shall send forth His angels, and they shall gather out of His kingdom all things that cause stumbling and those who do iniquity,
41 "Then He shall also say to those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you cursed, into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
42 and shall cast them into a furnace of fire. There shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
42 For I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink;
43 Then the righteous shall shine forth like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.
43 I was a stranger and you did not take Me in; naked and you did not clothe me; sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.'
44 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which, when a man had found it, he hid it. And for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
44 Then they also shall answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?'
45 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls,
45 Then He shall answer them, saying, 'Truly I say to you, because you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.'
46 who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.
46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
47 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was cast into the sea and gathered some of every kind,
48 which, when it was full, they pulled to shore and sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.
49 So shall it be at the end of the world. The angels shall come forth and separate the wicked from among the just,
50 and shall cast them into the furnace of fire. There shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth."
51 Jesus said to them, "Have you understood all these things?" They say to Him, "Yes, Lord."
52 Then He said to them, "Therefore every scribe who is instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like a man who is a landowner who brings forth out of his treasure new and old things."
53 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, that He departed from there.
54 And when He had come into His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, to such a degree that they were astonished and said, "Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works?
55 Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Judas?
56 And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?"
57 And they took offense at Him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house."
58 And He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
