1 And seeing the crowds, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him.
1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave to Him to show to His servants things that must shortly come to pass. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John,
2 Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:
2 who bore witness to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, and to all things that he saw.
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, because theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
3 Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things that are written in it, for the time is at hand.
4 Blessed are those who mourn, because they will be comforted.
4 John, to the seven churches that are in Asia: grace and peace be to you from Him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits that are before His throne,
5 Blessed are the meek, because they will inherit the earth.
5 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the firstborn of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood,
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, because they will be filled.
6 and has made us kings and priests to God and His Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
7 Blessed are the merciful, because they will obtain mercy.
7 Behold, He comes with clouds, and every eye shall see Him, and also those who pierced Him. And all tribes of the earth shall wail because of Him. Even so, Amen.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart, because they will see God.
8 "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending," says the Lord, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."
9 Blessed are the peacemakers, because they will be called the children of God.
9 I, John, who also am your brother and companion in tribulation and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, because theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,
11 “Blessed are you, when men revile you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for My sake.
11 saying, "I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last," and, "What you see, write in a book, and send it to the seven churches that are in Asia: to Ephesus, and to Smyrna, and to Pergamum, and to Thyatira, and to Sardis, and to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea."
12 Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, because great is your reward in heaven, because they also persecuted the prophets who were before you.
12 And I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks,
13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how shall it be salted? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and to be trampled underfoot by men.
13 and in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet, and girded about the chest with a golden girdle.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
14 His head and His hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes were like a flame of fire.
15 Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
15 And His feet like fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace, and His voice like the sound of many waters.
16 Let your light shine like this before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
16 And He had in His right hand seven stars, and out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His face was like the sun shining in its strength.
17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.
17 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. And He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, "Do not fear; I am the first and the last.
18 Because, truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law, until all is fulfilled.
18 I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of hell and of death."
19 Whoever therefore breaks one of these least commandments, but teaches men so, he will be called the least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, they will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
19 "Write the things that you have seen, and the things that are, and the things that shall be hereafter.
20 Because, I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter into the kingdom of heaven.
20 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in My right hand and the seven golden candlesticks: the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven candlesticks that you saw are the seven churches."
21 “You have heard that it was said by those of old times, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’
22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause will be in danger of the judgment. And whoever shall say to his brother, ‘Raca!’ will be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of hell fire.
23 Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,
24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
25 Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest at any time your adversary deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.
26 Truly, I say to you, you will by no means come out of there until you have paid the last penny.
27 “You have heard that it was said by those of old times, ‘You shall not commit adultery.
28 But I say to you that whoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.
29 And if your right eye offends you, pluck it out, and cast it from you; because, it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your your entire body to be thrown into hell.
30 And if your right hand offends you, cut it off and cast it from you; because, it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your entire body be cast into hell.
31 “It has been said, ‘whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.
32 But I say to you, that whoever puts away his wife for any reason except sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.
33 “Again, you have heard that it has been said to those of old times, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.
34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, because it is God's throne;
35 nor by the earth, because it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King.
36 Neither shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black.
37 But let your communication be, ‘yes,’ ‘yes,’ or ‘no,’ ‘no.’ Because whatever goes beyond these is from evil.
38 “You have heard that it has been said, ‘ An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.
39 But I tell you that you should not resist a wicked person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
40 And if anyone wants to sue you at the law and take away your coat, let him have your cloak also.
41 And whoever compels you to go one mile, go two with him.
42 Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.
43 “You have heard that it has been said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.
44 But I say to you, Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,
45 that you may be the children of your Father who is in heaven; because, He makes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
46 Because, if you love those who love you, what reward do you gain? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
47 And if you only greet your brethren, what do you do more than others? Do not even tax collectors do so?
