&lt;div&gt;The word &amp;quot;hate&amp;quot; in this verse does not mean &amp;quot;to despise&amp;quot;. The word meaning has changed since the reformation translations&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When the KJV was translated this word meant &amp;quot;love less&amp;quot;. The verse in a modern day translation should be translated something like the following:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If anyone comes to Me and does not love less his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>
