Minuscule 2049

Gregory-Aland 2049 (formerly 141) is said to be a sixteenth century minuscule of Revelation on paper; 23 leaves, single column, 24 lines per column. Images were taken at the Hellenic Parliament Library in Athens.in the Parliament Library, in Athens, Greece.

The codex is primarily of the lives of the saints, parenesis of the divine fathers, letter of Pilate to Tiberius, Acts of the holy apostle Thomas, and several other interesting works. 390 leaves for entire codex. It has water damage throughout outside edges, covering some text. Manuscript is incomplete for the text prior to the Apocalypse. The old leather cover is stored separately (wood boards covered with embossed leather).

Hoskier suggests that Erasmus used other Greek manuscripts such as 2049 (which Hoskier calls 141) for his finding, and the evidence could support this conclusion. In short, the Greek manuscript manuscript 2049 contains the reading found in the Textus Receptus. In an effort to nullify the testimony of Codex 141, most "scholars” claim that it is a copy of Erasmus’s (or Aldus’s or Colinaeus’s) printed Greek New Testament. But based on study of the penmanship of the scribe who composed it, Hoskier determined that Codex 141 was executed in the 15th century well before Erasmus’s Greek New Testament was printed; and based on his study of its contents (and the collation of same), Hoskier determined that MS 141 “has no appearance of being a copy of any printed edition of the Greek New Testament." There is manuscript and historical evidence to support the much disputed "Erasmian readings." [1]

Some defenders of the Textus Receptus have argued that Erasmus used other Greek manuscripts for the last six verses of Revelation. Manuscripts such as 2049, 2067 and 296 which contain similar readings to the Textus Receptus have been proposed as possible sources for Erasmus' readings in the book of Revelation. However, critical scholarship today views these manuscripts as being more likely being influenced by the printed Textus Receptus editions, instead of them being a source for the readings of Erasmus. It has also been noted that even if these manuscripts did not copy the Textus Receptus, that since Erasmus did not produce impossible Greek, it is possible for such manuscripts to contain similar readings by coincidence.
