SS(ancti) apostolorum septem epistolae catholicae

Extra Material

Christian Frederick Matthaei published SS(ancti) apostolorum septem epistolae catholicae in 1780 in which he discussed the grammatical problems caused by he omission of the Comma with Eugenios Voulgaris. [1] In his 1804 Novum Testamentum Graece he omits the Johannine Comma.

The beginning of the book SS[ancti] apostolorum septem epistolae catholicae has two scriptures concerning the Johannine Comma. Matthaei called the first scripture Cod A., which reads:

⁶ ὅτι τὸ Πνεῦμά ἐστιν ἡ ἀλήθεια. ⁷ ὅτι τρεῖς εἰσιν οἱ μαρτυροῦντες εν τῷ. ⁸ Tὸ Πνεῦμα, καὶ τὸ ὕδωρ, καὶ τὸ αἷμα· καὶ οἱ τρεῖς εἰς τὸ ἕν εἰσιν.

This text below highlights the differences from the Textus Receptus of Scrivener:

⁶ ὅτι τὸ Πνεῦμά ἐστιν ἡ ἀλήθεια. ⁷ ὅτι τρεῖς εἰσιν οἱ μαρτυροῦντες εν τῷ οὐρανῷ, ὁ πατήρ, ὁ λόγος, καὶ τὸ Ἅγιον Πνεῦμα· καὶ οὗτοι οἱ τρεῖς ἕν εἰσι. ⁸ καὶ τρεῖς εἰσὶν οἱ μαρτυροῦντες ἐν τῇ γῇ, τὸ Πνεῦμα, καὶ τὸ ὕδωρ, καὶ τὸ αἷμα· καὶ οἱ τρεῖς εἰς τὸ ἕν εἰσιν.

This means the book of Matthaei's book had a focus upon this verse, being on the very front page.

The the second picture Matthaei called Cod G., which reads:

⁶ ...τυροῦν ὅτι τὸ Πνεῦμά ἐστιν ἡ ἀλήθεια - ⁷ ὅτι τρεῖς εἰσιν οἱ μαρτυροῦντες. ⁸ Tὸ Πνεῦμα, καὶ τὸ ὕδωρ καὶ τὸ αἷμα· καὶ οἱ τρεῖς εἰς τὸ ἕν εἰσιν. ⁹ εἰ τὴν μαρτυρίαν τῶν ἀνθρώπων λαμβάνομεν, ἡ μαρτυρία τοῦ Θεοῦ μείζων ἐστίν·

Cod. A and Cod. G have a slight variant reading between themselves with Cod. G omitting "εν τῷ." in verse 7.

Novum Testamentum Graece

In his 1804 Novum Testamentum Graece he omits the Johannine Comma. His notes point to the Complutensian Polyglot reading at Matthew 6:13.[2]

Wordsworth

A reference to the scholium is given by Christopher Wordsworth (1807-1885) is The New Testament of 1862 which states:

"the gender of the words here is very remarkable ... And so the ancient Scholium in Matthaei says that "John uses the number three in the masculine gender, because those three are symbols of the Trinity," and by using the word ἕν "he designates the unity of the Godhead".

The scholium is referenced by a number of other writers until about 1890, after which the quality of heavenly witnesses writing was not so strong, although it is likely referenced in Bludau. [3]
