'''Minuscule 817''' (in the [[Biblical manuscript#Gregory-Aland|Gregory-Aland]] numbering), Θε52 ([[Biblical manuscript#Von Soden|von Soden]]),[1][2] is a [[Greek language|Greek]] [[Lower case|minuscule]] [[manuscript]] of the [[New Testament]] written on paper, with a commentary. It was used by Erasmus. [[Palaeography|Palaeographically]] it has been assigned to the 15th century.

== Description ==
The [[codex]] contains the complete text of the four [[Gospel]]s, on 255 paper leaves (size 29 cm by 21 cm).[3]

The text is written in one column per page, 34–46 lines per page.[3][4]

It contains Prolegomena, tables of the [[κεφαλαια]] (''tables of contents'') before each of the Gospels, and a commentary of [[Theophylact of Ohrid|Theophylact]].[5]

== Text ==
The Greek text of the codex is a representative of the [[Byzantine text-type]]. [[Kurt Aland|Aland]] did not place it in any [[Categories of New Testament manuscripts|category]].[6]

It was not examined according to the [[Claremont Profile Method]].[7]

It lacks the [[Jesus and the woman taken in adultery|Pericope Adulterae]] (John 7:53–8:11).[5]

In [[John 1:45]] it reads Ιησουν τον υιον Ιωσηφ (''Jesus, son of Joseph'') along with manuscripts: [[Codex Alexandrinus|Alexandrinus]], [[Codex Cyprius|Cyprius]], [[Codex Campianus|Campianus]], [[Codex Macedoniensis|Macedoniensis]], [[Codex Sangallensis 48|Sangallensis]], Petropolitanus, [[Uncial 047]], [[Minuscule 7|7]], [[Minuscule 8|8]], [[Minuscule 196|196]], [[Uspenski Gospels|461]], 1514, 1519; majority of the manuscripts read Ιησουν τον υιον του Ιωσηφ;[8]

In John 4:51 it reads υιος (''son'') for παις (''servant''), the reading of the codex is supported by [[Codex Bezae]], [[Codex Cyprius|Cyprius]], Petropolitanus Purpureus, Petropolitanus, [[Codex Nanianus|Nanianus]], [[Uncial 0141|0141]], [[Minuscule 33|33]], [[Minuscule 194|194]], [[Minuscule 196|196]], [[Minuscule 743 (Gregory-Aland)|743]], [[Minuscule 892|892]], 1192, [[Minuscule 1216 (Gregory-Aland)|1216]], 1241.[9]

== History ==

The manuscript was dated by Gregory to the 15th century.[5] The manuscript is currently dated by the [[Institute for New Testament Textual Research| INTF]] to the 15th century.[4]

The early story of the manuscript and its provenance is unknown. It was held in the monastery of Dominican in Basel in the beginning of the 16th century. Since 1559 it was held in the [[University of Basel]].[5]

[[Desiderius Erasmus]] received this codex from the [[Dominican Order|Dominican]] monks at the Basel, and used it for the first edition of his ''[[Novum Instrumentum omne]]'' (1516).[10] [[Robert Estienne]] did not use this manuscript in his [[Editio Regia]] (1550), but his edition was based on the Erasmian text. As a result some of its readings appear in the [[Textus Receptus]].[11]

It was added to the list of New Testament manuscripts by [[C. R. Gregory|Gregory]] (817e). Gregory saw it in 1885.[5]

The manuscript is now housed at the [[Basel University Library]] with the shelf number A. N. III, 15.[3][4]
