'''De''' (Д, д; italics: ''Д, д'') is a letter of the [[Cyrillic alphabet]].

It commonly represents the [[voiced dental plosive]] /d/, similar to the English pronunciation of the [[D|Latin letter D]].

In [[Russian language|Russian]], [[Bulgarian language|Bulgarian]], [[Ukrainian language|Ukrainian]], and [[Macedonian language|Macedonian]] it is romanized using the Latin letter D.

==History==
The Cyrillic letter De was derived from the [[delta (letter)|Greek letter Delta]] (Δ, δ). The major graphic difference from its Greek equivalent lies in the two "feet" below the lower corners of Cyrillic letter De.

In the [[Early Cyrillic alphabet]] its name was {{Script|Cyrs|добро}} (''dobro''), meaning "good".

In the [[Cyrillic numerals|Cyrillic numeral system]], De had a value of 4.

==Form==
The Cyrillic letter De, like the [[El (Cyrillic)|Cyrillic letter El]], has two [[typography|typographical]] variants: one where its top is square, and one where it is pointed (like Delta).

The handwritten form of capital letter De looks like Latin [[D]] as the printed version is not comfortable enough to be written quickly. The handwritten lowercase letter looks a bit like a lowercase Latin ‹''g''› and it is joined to a following letter by its tail [http://www.cccp.de/talk/bilder/1128080953.jpg]. In italic type, the lowercase form looks more like the lowercase Latin ‹d›: ‹''д''›.

==Usage==
The letter De represents the [[voiced dental plosive]] {{IPA|/d/}}, except word-finally and before voiceless consonants it represents a voiceless {{IPA|[t]}} and before a [[palatalizing]] vowel it represents {{IPA|/dʲ/}}.
